In my travels through Canada, a stand-out favorite is Banff, Alberta. Located at the south end of the Canadian Rockies, Banff marks the start of a series of amazing mountains, lakes, glaciers, ice fields, and wildlife.
Drive north from town and you’re on your way through the Rocky Mountains, half an hour from Lake Louise, two hours from Athabasca Glacier, and three hours from Jasper; all spots worth a visit of their own.
Banff town is a quaint mountain resort town. On approach, there doesn’t appear to be much to see, but once you arrive the great naturescapes will quickly grab you. The town is surrounded by rivers and mountain views.
Traveling in Autumn in Canada things were getting cold, but nestled just above town are the Banff Upper Hot Springs, the highest operating springs in the country.
Back in town things were quiet, quiet enough that deer happily roam the streets. In the 3rd photo below, I was just meters from the doe on the other side of the brush. A few steps and I would have been able to pat her. They’re confident enough around people that you can really see them up close.
Overnight the snow came in during our visit, but this made it no less enjoyable being there. Though I ended up in Banff in Autumn by chance, as fate would have it I was glad we were there in the colder, quiet season.
It made the feeling of being remote all the better without bustling past tourists everywhere.
Hiking the trails was still doable, and the snow was gentle enough that driving to surrounding areas of interest was still doable.
A popular attraction is the Banff Gondola, which takes you to the summit of Sulphur Mountain for great panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Skiing and snowboarding aren’t for me, but if that’s your thing there are plenty of options around too.
The town has its share of shops, cafes, and the usual assortment of venues. If the cold gets too much for you there’s a great brewery and beer hall on the main strip (go for the beer paddle).
And when your visit is done, you’ve only got more of the Rocky Mountains to look forward to.
If you haven’t yet been to Canada, put Banff on your to-do list.
